1975 - 2010
Laura's parents are mourning the death of their daughter, a kind-hearted psychologist and extreme athlete, after she crashed her bicycle while training for an Ironman triathlon in the Canary Islands.
Laura MacKay, 37, and her husband, Travis Eltom, were on their racing bikes, alone on a steep, winding road near the village of Masca when the mishap occurred Thursday morning.
Her husband, a tactical officer with the Edmonton Police Service, will be carrying her ashes home Sunday evening.
MacKay’s father, Bert MacKay, said the island had been hit with thunderstorms Monday, and more rain during the week, and the road was muddy. He said just before the fatal crash his daughter turned to Eltom and said it was “the most beautiful place on earth.”
Then she pushed off again, and seven or eight minutes later she lost control and hit the rock face lining the road.
The roads were in too poor a condition for an ambulance to respond. A helicopter was dispatched, but MacKay died from her head injuries a short time later.

Message: Laura, was an amazing sister - so full of life and love for her husband Travis. She was very happy these past few years with Travis and developed into an incredible athlete. The last day I had with her was the day before she flew out to the Canary Islands with Travis. We went for lunch on White Ave, Edmonton and she treated me to a pedicure. I will hold onto many sweet memories of her - she was a sweet sister. Thanks to everyone for their kind words and support - Marion

Message: I think of her and still see that smile and hear that giggle. I met her at Peter Pond School and remember well the gatherings at my cousin Chow's getting all dolled up for the crazy school dances where most of the time we spent standing in a circle waiting for some guy to have the courage to ask. Her smile and giggle always (and still does) brought instant happiness to the moment. Thank you Laura for blessing us with your life, your love and your beautiful presence. Shannon

Message: My thoughts and prayers go out to Laura's family. I used to work with Laura when she worked in High Level and really enjoyed her spirit and smile. I am deeply shocked to here her tragic story. Since moving from High Level, she sounded like she lived life to the fullest and am happy that she pursued her fitness goals with adventure.
so sorry,
