A day that was supposed to mark celebration and the start of the 2010 Olympic Games turned tragic on Friday morning following the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili.
The 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the Poly Clinic in Whistler after a crash during his final pre-Olympic training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre.
IOC president Jacques Rogge made an emotional statement at an early afternoon news conference at the waterfront media centre. "This is a very sad day," he said after taking off his glasses and wiping his eyes. "I have no words to say what we feel."
"We are heart broken beyond words," VANOC CEO John Furlong added, fighting tears.
Rogge said he had spoken with the president of Georgia and also the Georgian team. He said they are considering withdrawing from the Games, which begin officially tonight with the Opening Ceremony, where skier Iason Abramashvili was supposed to be the country's flagbearer. There are seven other Georgian athletes at the Winter Games.
Kumaritashvili is from Borjomi, a resort town of 15,000 on the Georgian south.
